Program Objectives
The Medical Receptionis/Ward Clerk program provides entrance level competencies in medical reporting practice and procedure, while developing the participant's word processing skills—for processing forms and documents in accordance with established procedures, guidelines, and schedule—using computerized and manual processing systems. This program introduces standard administrative functions in a typical medical environment while developing skills in medical terminology, medical transcription, and medical documentation. This program is designed for students who want to gain specialization in the Medical Receptionist role of answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing medical records, completing insurance forms, producing documentation, scheduling appointments, handling billing tasks, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services; and the Ward Clerk role of organizing patient charts, completing standard chart forms, and transcribing physician orders related to patient care and treatment.
Career Opportunities
The Medical Receptionist/Ward Clerk program affords the graduate an opportunity to provide the clerical and administrative support in health care settings such as: doctor's offices and public health agencies—reporting directly to a medical office assistant; or employed in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and eldercare facilities—reporting directly to a head nurse or nurse manager.
