TOURISM, TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY
Eastern College, formerly CompuCollege, is the only private or public post-secondary institution
to offer a curriculum designed completely around the national
occupational standards.
Program Objectives
The exciting new Integrated Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Program at CompuCollege has been designed by industry experts in consultation with sector professionals to meet the human resource needs of the tourism, travel and hospitality sectors.
Graduates of this program will attain the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be competent in tourism occupations across the nation. Occupational Standards as defined by the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) will provide the foundation for the program relevant to occupations in the five groups of the tourism industry:
• Accommodations
• Food and Beverage Services
• Recreation and Entertainment
• Transportation
• Travel Services
This four-phased program outlines a core program, followed by an occupational focused and directed services stream, a field placement and a final specialization aimed at creating a well-rounded professional in the tourism, travel and hospitality industry.
Topics covered in Phase One and Two are designed to develop students' base of knowledge on both the macro and micro level and are intended to help students understand the “big picture” so that they will be motivated to do their best whatever occupational option they pursue. Phase One, the Core, has been designed to be the foundation for Phase Two, where students will choose between the options of Hospitality Services or Transportation and Travel Services.
Upon completing the Phase Three Field Placement and then completing one of the occupational specialty options in Phase Four (Hospitality Specialist, Event Co-ordinator, or Travel Specialist), students will have a solid foundation to enter today's tourism industry.
Each Phase Four occupational specialization includes topics related to the occupational standards approved nationally for emerit by professionals in those occupations. Upon completing specified modules in Phase Four, students will qualify to write the knowledge component exam for each occupation in their selected specialized option.
At the end of the program, graduates will be prepared to take their place in an occupation in the industry locally or beyond. With the emerit certifications graduates will be set apart from the competition and will have a competitive advantage in their professional development.
Career Opportunities
The global tourism industry offers opportunities for advancement and can be an exciting flexible and friendly industry in which to pursue a career. By 2015, the number of people employed in tourism-related occupations in Canada is projected to reach 1.95 million. There are well over 400 occupations in the tourism industry and 290,000 new jobs are expected to be developed in Canada in the next 5 years. The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) in their 2008-2015 Labor Market Plan indicates that the next decade, in spite of current economics, will present a major challenge to human resources to ensure that the tourism industry remains competitive. In Atlantic Canada the need for skilled labor is acute and will remain so as the tourism industry flourishes and develops.
Certification
Certification based upon occupational standards is possible for front line, supervisory and managerial positions. Participants in educational programs can become certified after completing a program and then seek further certification after being employed in the related specific occupation anywhere in Canada. There are 48 occupations for which standards have been developed by the CTHRC. A person can achieve certificates at four stages: Tourism Essential Certificate, Occupational Knowledge Certificate, Occupational Experience Certificate, emerit Professional certificate.
Eastern College students will receive value and a strong return on their investment, graduating with up to four emerit certifications-one complete and three with the knowledge component (receiving full certification once occupation experience is gained and a performance evaluation occurs) plus five other industry certificates on service excellence. Acquiring these credentials will produce a graduate that is highly marketable in the employment marketplace.
