Home Programs Child and Youth Care with Addictions Support Worker
Program Objectives
Helping young people and their families overcome emotional and behavioural problems is the child and youth care worker's role. With the Child and Youth Care diploma, offered in cooperation with Grant MacEwan College of Edmonton, Alberta, you can offer your concern, guidance, and encouragement to troubled young people and their families. Building on the counselling, crisis intervention and creative helping strategies taught in the Child and Youth Care program, the Addictions Support Worker modules explore the physical, emotional and social effects of alcohol, drugs and gambling, examine the process of addictions assessment and teach effective case management skills. Upon graduation you will have completed the formal education requirements for the International Certified Alcohol And Drug Counsellor certification administered by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation. The ICADC certification also comprises significant work experience, clinical training, portfolio and examination components.
Career Opportunities
The Child & Youth Care with Addictions Support Worker program helps prepare students for a broad range of counselling opportunities associated with both youth and addictions. You could enjoy a rewarding career as a youth worker, family support worker, employee and family assistance counsellor, recovery and group home worker, addictions counsellor, community education and prevention worker, counsellor assistant or family-school liaison worker. Work settings include treatment centres, group homes, youth centres, family support programs, community based and foster care programs, correctional facilities, mental health agencies and schools.
